Boys like yogurt too.

It's 2011. It has been for 16 days now. For the last few decades, women have been convinced that gender equality is near, if not already achieved.  But just because Ellen Degeneres has a talk show and Lisa Lampenelli gets a few too many laughs up on stage doesn't mean that the struggle is over. I say "the struggle" like I'm some sort of man hating, bra burning feminist (even though I don't practice the art of wearing a bra), but I think it's pretty clear that sexism is the most prominent theme in media today. Commercials not only market a product, but a way of life. 
Things women advertise: Swiffers, windex, vacuums, pledge cleaning supplies, hamburger helper, cookware, bakeware, food products, yogurt, chocolate, weight loss supplements and laundry detergents. 
Things men advertise: Grills, sportswear, lawn mowers, cars, electronics, tools and beer. 
If I was a women in today's media, I would be white. I would be blonde. I would be swiffering my house in the middle of a weekday. I would be alone cleaning because my husband would be at work and my kids would be in school. I would be mopping up my dog's piss with a porcelain veneered smile slapped on my face. I would be preparing a meal, but I wouldn't eat it because my non FDA approved diet supplement would curve my appetite. And of course, I would be covered in yogurt. 
If I was a man in today's media, I would be white (or maybe I would be the white guy's black sidekick.) I would be young and strong. I would be grilling burgers for a party over some hot coals. I would be mowing the lawn in concentric patterns smiling all the while. I would be racing a sports car through an unrealistic terrain of red desert lands or snow covered mountains. I would be hammering sheetrock onto the top of my house in the suburbs. I would have an icy beer to my right. I would come home to a house free of dog piss and full of Hamburger Helper.
